Water Project
In 2006 Kapital Produce began recycling their leach water by treating it with hydrogen peroxide. What initially began as a way to recycle water and save on fertilizer costs as well as using less municipal water turned into a desire to become completely self sufficient in irrigation water.
Ollie Mastronardi of Kapital Produce explains it this way:
What started out as a way of saving money on fertilizer became a much larger endeavour. We looked at this project for two different reasons. First, we wanted to lessen our impact on the environment. Kapital uses a tremendous amount of water each year that must be treated by the municipal water system before use. After use the run-off was simply returned to the water table including all of the nutrients we added to the water. I personally feel it is important to lessen our impact on the environment wherever possible.
The second reason I wanted to look at this project was of course economic. This is one of the very few, if not the only investment I could make and achieve less than a two year payback. The savings in water consumption and fertilizer have been tremendous.
Mr. Mastronardi approached the Gryphon team in 2007 looking for a better solution than hydrogen peroxide to treat his irrigation water. He wanted a method of treatment that did not introduce potentially harmful chemicals into the water. Together a plan was developed to not only capture and treat all of the leachate at Kapital, but also to capture all rainwater and treat it as well. Further into the project four wells were added to make Kapital truly self – sufficient in irrigation water needs.
We now treat over 600 gallons per minute of water at Kapital utilizing our custom designed Ozone treatment equipment. This water is collected from rainwater, return leach, and well water. After treatment the water is stored in tanks until needed for use. On site storage at Kapital is sufficient for the irrigation needs of the entire greenhouse complex for two days.
Mastronardi goes on to say:
The results of this project have been amazing. We now use municipal water only for emergency back-up and for our kitchen and washroom needs. The savings we have seen have far exceeded expectations. As an added bonus we have lessened our impact on the environment.
If you are considering the savings that can be achieved by reducing your reliance on the municipal water system, contact the Gryphon team for a no obligation assessment of how we can help you achieve your goals
